While cleaning up my 'other' aluminum boat for the season I went off to Wal-Mart for some of the wheel cleaner I usually use to get the summer's worth of lake scum off the hull. (...it stays in the water from May 'til' October) They were out of my usual brand so perusing the other brand's labels I found this product from Meguiar's:
There are 3 flavors; Aluminum (mildest), All wheels (medium), and Chrome (strongest). While the aluminum one was pretty similar to the product I normally use for end-of-season cleanup, I noticed that the Chrome version shared several ingredients with the NAPA product used by some for serious cleaning:
Both are Phosphoric acid based and share a couple other ingredients. I tried some to see what it could do. While not a scientific test, I found that it's nearly as effective as the NAPA product. While both require careful handling along with gloves and eye protection, the Meguiar's didn't seem to create the same 'caustic cloud' that the NAPA does. It's a bit cheaper, unless you get a gallon of the NAPA, and it might be a little easier to find.
I couldn't resist cleaning the Lund with it and now it has that 'fresh from the factory' finish. I just might have to polish it now.
