I took the lower unit of the Lark apart... again.

I found that the oil seal was not totally level in the oil seal retainer housing. I got it pushed in level. Put it all back together.......

.....and oil is leaking out faster.

There is a wear ring on prop shaft, but it doesn't look that bad.

I have had this thing apart 5 times. I'm getting irked.

Do I need to get a new shaft?

Coming to Rivet Rendezvous is on my calendar! I have some family on Harsen's and it's only an hour.

I didn't notice any were on the shaft, the seal is new and I think the right one. The seal carrier was a bit beat up, but looked good on the mating surfaces. I will photograph when I take it back apart. I have a parts motor so I will look at the other shaft I have.

I reserved the thermal camera from by library. When it comes I'm post some of that stuff too.

Karim,

If the new seal isn't install straight, in other words has an angle to as the shaft goes through it, it will not seat properly on the shaft to give you the seal you need.

Are you planning on coming out for the Rivet Rendezvous at the end of June? It would be good to see the boat and meet another fellow rivethead...

not sure what to say, without seeing it........was it the right seal?, ............i am sure its not, could it be in backwards?.......what did the shaft look like, any wear on it at the seal?

dont let the leak slow you down from getting the boat and motor hooked up, that foot can come off anytime regardless.......

Did you replace the o-ring as well as the seal. Also the shift rod o-ring and the spaghetti seal should be replaced.

Thanks jabe
It's coming right along. With the motor running I'm tempted to put it on the boat and get the controls on and the wiring in, but.....

The prop shaft is leaking. I put in to a new seal and it is still leaking. Right around the shaft.

Any thoughts?

ps.- Your motor posts are inspiring! Those motors sure are pretty.

lookin good Karim.......ya come a long way since we first met........:shades:

when ever i test run my motors i put my hand under the return water, and also hold the heads with both hands, (easier if you have 3 hands :hand:) if ya can hold them and they are warm you are good......if after 5 secs or so and you have to pull your hand away because its too hot, then i would worry......just a quick simple check, they will run a bit hotter in a tank after an extended period, with the water warming up.........glad too hear you changed the impeller, better to be safe than sorry, miles out on the water, with bits of rubber getting caught up in the motor......wouldn't be a good thing.........cheers, hope to see ya this summer
