it's always been my understanding, the spring side ( pressure side) is always on the oil side...
that being said, which has more pressure the oil side or the water on the outside, :hmm: perhaps this is how many get installed backwards.....evil of 2 pressures..:yikes:

I have read a lot of post about the various details of sealing one of these lower units, it would be good if we had one definitive guide to the whole process.

sounds like a great idea, i would offer but i am out of lower units needin done, and i forget to take pics as i am doing one..........plus the fact my ways are not always text book........:shhh:

The seal is removed by driving it out with a pin punch through the two small holes on the outside of the retainer. You will most likely destroy the seal when removing it. You will need a new seal to replace the one you drive out.

Should the top seal for the drive shaft be installed the same way?

"I swear on a stack of bibles that I have it in just as the old one was.... But yes the spring side is not toward the oil side."

Could have been why it was leaking before.

Really? Backwards..

I swear on a stack of bibles that I have it in just as the old one was.... But yes the spring side is not toward the oil side.

Ok, is there a decent way to get those seals out without destroying them....

Thanks Guys.

from what i can see, i believe John is right.........there is a fine spring that encircles the inner lip, that should be on the oil side of the retainer...........the weight/pressure of the oil against that lip tightens up the seal against the shaft.........also wouldn't hurt to spin some emery cloth on the shaft as well, just to shine it up........

Here is what I'm working with.

As I look at in i'm suspicious of the seal carrier.

I beat it up pretty good removing the old seal....

Most of the oil leaked out overnight.

It was a slow leak until I pushed the seal further into the carrier.

Are you sure it's leaking around the shaft and not around the seal retainer? Do you have the seal retainer lined up with the locating pin?
