Rick,

Are you taking orders yet?

Almost ready. I'm trying out a new photosensitive resist that should be cheaper and yield a better quality mask. I have a few things to do still to get set up to expose it. Hopefully I can get back to that in the next week or so. In the mean time, this is what I have prepared for artwork:

If there's any interest I'll add the old style, rounded feather, 4 rivet type too. There's a left and right of each that are reversed. You mentioned wanting a rectangular one. Will one of these work for you?

Im interested in a set of the old style 4 rivet type. Do you have a proof of what it looks like.

A sample of the 'D' type...

Thanks MKEV2... The cutting stuff out part starts with a computer drawn pattern like this one:

...that gets tack glued to the sheet. It's roughed out on a scroll saw and then sanded to the pattern outline on a disc sander. The patterns make things pretty repeatable and it's pretty quick.

When I have to do a bunch more, I thought about switching the final trimming to a pattern and bearing guided bit on the router table. In practice though, it won't be much faster, and only a bit more precise. On a boat that was hand built anyway, that probably doesn't matter much

I'm blown away.

Thanks for sharing your information and knowledge.

I'll start at the beginning. How do you cut the ovals so perfectly?

thanks,

Thanks for the kind words. This cosmetic work has been fun, but I'll need to get back to serious stuff soon.

Jabe, I wish you were closer too. I just found out a few weeks ago that my friend, next door neighbor, and current bucking assistant is selling his house and moving out of state. If you've ever thought of living on a quiet pond in scenic (...and tax free) NH, now's your chance. ;)

Ray, yes, that's just how they came out of the tank. All I did was give the whole part a quick going over with maroon Scotchbrite on my orbital sander after washing off the resist. Some sources suggested finishing with a light bead blasting to even out the texture before removing the resist, but with this etching solution and aluminum I really don't think it's necessary. The etched texture looks very much like it's been blasted already.

thanks rick, beautiful home, gonna have to pass.......i agree with the way the etching leaves it own patina, gives it a nice contrast with the buffed face surface........i too am going to leave it as is.........great job man
