I think I'd stick with the small one so as not to have to worry about going to fast.

Ok, I see 2 fuel pumps for Evinrudes. The small square one (18-7350), and the larger 'house' shaped one (18-7352). I have the small square one on my motor, but every one of those say it's for up to 18 HP motors. Should I have the larger one on my 40 HP motor?

I never close my vents, is that a bad thing?

It's is possible that you have something bouncing around in front of the high speed jet. There is a plug on the front center of the carb that gets removed and with a jet screwdriver you can remove the main jet. I have heard of plastic like particles found in this area. Evidently the particle would fall away from blocking the jet when the engine died and the get pulled up to block the jet when running at speed.



It does sound like the fuel pump though. If you could have someone pump steady on the primer bulb when you are running at high speed on the lake and if it keeps running fine then it is the fuel pump.

IMO, this is the step in the diagnosis that you haven't tried.

Ha! Don, I had atag on the dash of the Flyer “open the vent dummy”

I would rebuild or replace the fuel pump from the symptoms.

The tuner gets sprayed into the carb as the motor is running.
It might not be the answer you are looking for but it will give a really good cleaning if perhaps there is some blockage.

I'm sure y'all aren't as dumb as I, but a similar thing happened to me and after paddling back to the dock I discovered that I forgot to open the vent on the gas tank...duh.
