What HP for Vagabond II 13 Jan 2020 03:06 #101351

I am a little reluctant to jump into this discussion because I think there is no one answer for the question, it all depends so much on how you plan to use the boat.
I have been running a 50 HP Johnson that we put on our Vagabond in 1998, it is a great motor and it makes driving a Vagabond feel like a sports car, a great pleasure, fast, and reliable, with good fuel mileage for a carbureted two stroke.
The new four stroke motors are pretty attractive, quiet, great gas mileage, clean burning.
It's all in what you want your experience to be

By the way, nice looking motor. B)

Thanks for the insight guys! I'll be boating most of the time where there is some chop, so likely I won't run at full throttle all that often. But the occasional time when the water is smooth and the mood strikes, I like to scoot along! Anyone I'd be boating with will either greatly exceed me in power (21' @ 200 hp), or under with a 16'wood boat and a 15 hp. I like the looks of the '58 Lark, but for 50 more lbs I could get a 59 or 55 hp... lol. Or 75 lb and 50 hp with power tilt/trim

My 1958 Vagabond goes about 27 or 28 MPH with just me in it on smooth water with either my 1957 35 HP or my 1955 25 HP Evinrudes. With more people in my boat the 35 will hold top speed better than the 25.

Not all that much difference in top speed between the 30 and 40, a few mph. I'm hoping that the 48SPL will give me a solid 5mph more but comparing the 48SPL with the older 40 isn't fair because the manner it which hp was determined was changed between the time the 40 and 48 were made. By some accounts, the 48SPL is equivalent to an earlier 60. Time will tell.
While attending the FL meet 2 yrs ago, I met a fellow with a Vagabond that had, if I recall, a late model 60hp motor. When I asked him about his top speed, his response was not much over 30. This confirmed what I'd heard quite some time ago being that the hull design is the limiting factor as far as top speed is concerned. What never crossed my mind about having more hp was, as the fellow in FL told me, top end isn't as high as expected but he can get to it a lot quicker than with a smaller hp motor AND his top speed isn't adversely affected by number of passengers he's carrying.
Another consideration when choosing a motor, before I get off my soapbox :) is mpg and where you'll be running when in a group. The mpg is self explanatory in that newer motors typically get better mpg. As for where you'll be running when in a group, a favorite saying of mine is it's better to have the power and not need it than to need it and not have it. :)

There ya go... I've hit 31 with just me, almost out of fuel and one beer left, on just small ripples and little headwind.

I ran an old 40 just like BigBadJon's. I liked it, it ran great. 25-26 Mph.

Now I'm running a new 25 hp Yamaha. A bit slow, a lot quieter, and gets way better mileage. No fussing around.

I run a 40 hp Lark alongside 35 and 30's, all on Vagabonds, and I doubt there is no more than a one or two mph difference. I'd venture to say, weight distribution, added equipment, heaviness of the Captain and total amount of beer and ice have more affect.....B)

Personally, I've run 30, 35 and 40 hp motors on my Vagabonds. The 30 and 35 being period correct. I was happy with the overall performance of both. The 40 is a '64 model and performs very well too. Last Fall, I bought a couple of OMC 48SPLs. That's what I'll be putting on the Vagabond II I'm presently restoring. Should work for me. :)
As for that 65 the previous owner of yours was running all those yrs. I'm impressed and would like to see what kind of additional transom support he added, if any.

What HP outboards are guys using on their Vagabonds? Mine is rated to 45 hp, the guy who owned her previously used a 65 hp Merc on his other Vaga... seems rather over powered to me! But he had run that engine on that boat for close to 40 years, so it evidently could handle it. He said "I liked to go 40 mph" lol. I'm considering a period correct Evinrude 35 hp, a 60's 40 hp, or the lightest highest hp possible in a short shaft. What are your experiences? Speed with a 35 hp? Thanks!!
