I think the 58 is the right choice too, I could really use your help on the rebuild though, I just read through the whole thread for the 58A you are doing!

Things are moving along nicely with the 58A.
If you would like to discuss your motor PM me.

Thanks,

The 65 HP 4 cylinders are not the same block as the 44 cubic inch 40/50 HP Mercury's like the Mark 58.

from what i can tell by the covers (still have to look at the serial #) its a 63-65 chrome handle and band Merc 650. Yes the merc 650 had the panther block. Hard to find actual weight figures from merc befor '71.

I have conflicting weights too, some say the 15"shaft is only 165lbs but others are saying 195lbs.. will have to do a little more digging. the 650 is still a 4 cylinder block and there was a weight difference between the early-late models too

The 1990’s 50 HP OMC motor weighs 185 pounds, please correct me if I am wrong but I think the 65 HP Mercury weighs about 250 pounds. I tried to research this and found a dramatic difference between different 65 HP models.
I have run one of the 50 HP OMC motors for 22 years and it is borderline when loaded with 4 adults, even in calm water.

hey guys! I'm new to the forum and this is my first post! I have been a big feather craft fan for a long time and after a long time looking over here in the northeast for the right boat I just picked up a 1956 Vagabond II. I was looking for this type of thread because I was actually thinking of running my 1965 Merc 650 on it once I beef up the transom a bit. my reasoning is because I will be primarily in the ocean/inlets with this boat and worry about strong currents, I frequently will have 4 people and a dog. I do have a Mark 58AE that I would like to put on for long term but it needs a rebuild and was going to use the 650 for the interim. Also thinking of running a 1995 Merc 40hp oil injected 2 stroke and doing a 1960s classic 500 cover swap. you guys think I'm crazy for running the 650? it weighs the same as the 1990s 40/50hp people are running.
I'm open to all opinions/suggestions Cheers!

Locomotion wrote: Just to complicate things, the 10% figure is about right for the larger newer motors, they have spiral bevel gears in the lower units, but the smaller motors, even most of the newer ones have straight cut bevel gears. The spiral bevel gears have a lot less loss of power through them than the straight cut bevel gears, to make matters worse, the less torque put through either gear type the greater the power loss. The spiral bevel gears run hotter but the straight cut bevels lose more like 15%.

I bumped this up to correct my earlier statement, after a little research I found I was wrong about the older small lower units not having spiral bevel gears, the last older lower I was into was a Merc Quickie and it had straight cut bevel gears, but the 50s OMC lower units have spiral cut gears.
Regarding the question of how much is lost from flywheel to prop, the 35 HP OMC was rated back to 30 HP when the mandate to rate at the prop came about.
