Dan, I agree that the bow eye is the perfect place to have a small boat towed from but many larger boats don't have bow eyes and I wouldn't want to have to tie my anchor line or moor my boat from the bow eye.

For being towed the bow eye is in the best location. Tying into the deck is a high point and pulls the bow down making it harder to tow. Plus the bow eye is in the middle of the boat so the boat tows straight.

I'm lucky enough to find existing holes in the deck of my DR for accessories like bow chocks. I added some to my DR just to fill the holes! One of the main things I've used mine for is hanging fenders over the bow for docking and locking, etc. Mine are located about 1/3 of the way from the bow. When I hang fenders from them, they fall far enough back to be functional.

I have always been under the impression that the chocks should be as far forward as possible and still not interfere with any other deck hardware. This locates them in the best position for being towed or for anchoring. I located mine just far enough away from the bow to clear my bow light.

I have mine about 3/4 up like your upper photo. They work great with the mooring bit.

I found a pair ofvintage Wilcox Crittenden bow chocks, super nice looking.

But I have a question.... Where is the best place to install them? My thoughts are 3/4" of the way up the deck towards the bow? Not sure. I thought I saw Bikecop have a set on his Hawk?
