The Sound is pretty stable, 45 to 55 degrees is about the outside ranges, I wouldn't think it is ever cold enough to be an issue and I would think it would keep a gear box nice and cool B)

The thing to keep in mind is that grease is just oil with thickeners added to keep it in place, mostly soaps, but now a lot have lithium added as well. The main concern with using grease instead of oil is temperature extreams, if you are planning of cold winter running it can be a problem or if you run long and hard enough heat buildup damages grease more than it does oil, which can circulate and help control heat buildup.

I agree with the others about replacing the seals and using oil instead of grease. However, after 70 years the bushings and prop shaft may be a little too tired to allow the use of oil even with new seals. When this motor was first produced Mercury recommended the use of grease. Lubriplate 105 or JD cornhead grease will both work fine. Some guys use a combination of both oil and grease.

The old seals and gaskets left much to be desired.

I'm with Jabe here. The Corn Head Grease thing is really about keeping the lubricant in when the seals may be, or become, compromised. We need to care about keeping water out too. If you're actually replacing seals and gaskets then it should work just fine.

I have always been told to use grease in lower units that have no gear shifting ability, and gear oil in lower units that have gear shifting.

so on the advise of guys from Fiberglassics ( which I can not open for few days now) I have ordered John Deere Corn Head grease......and I think I will just fill the whole gearbox with it to insure gear lubrication......
