It is a short shaft. Research done late last night shows that the 40hp and 50hp share the same weight, cubic inch, etc. I just checked my phone and yes, I did butt dial you last night at 11:34. Sorry about that. I had stopped at a gas station on the way home and used my phone. .

Dan, Feather Craft did the glove box doors on the 1954 Vagabonds that were made after September up to September of 1955. The made two types of glove box doors one with the handles as you have and then they started stamping in a half moon finger grip instead of a handle. My Vagabond was made in April of 1955 and I have the handles like yours does. Alan Biltz's Vagabond has the half moon finger grip. Alan's Vagabond was made in May of 1955. So to narrow it down this boat was made between September of 1954 and April of 1955... The only thing that is confusing is the rear handle is not the rounded off type. Steve Gower Web Master

I'm not sure what it is on the center console in the craigslist photos but there is nothing there now.
