Ray,
I served on three ships during my four years of active duty. All three were auxiliary ships. Auxiliary ships are non combatant ships that provide service to the fleet such as cargo ships, ammunition ships, refrigeration ships that resupply food, oilers as well as many others. I served on the USS Tanner AGS 15 which was a geographical survey ship followed by two fleet tugs, the USS Papago ATF 160 and the USS Seneca ATF 91. These fleet tugs carry a 60 man crew and can tow a broken down ship back to port.

The ELCO PT boats held 3000 gallons of gas. They only burned up 200 gallons per hour at cruising speed. The 80 foot ELCOs had a top speed of about 45 MPH, however, as the engines wore and barnacles attached themselves to the bottoms speed was lost. After the war some were sold to the civilian  population and the first thing they did was to remove those thirsty Packard engines and replace them with diesel power plants.

John,
If I remember correctly you were a Navy man, what type of boat were you on?
An 80 foot boat at 45 mph, WOW!

OK. I need some answers. I had one beer after swimming at a state park in NY after cruising to the Singer Castle. How did a 16 oz beer find  the perfect place  to hide in my boat, behind my battery. Are they afraid of customs? Or is Canadian beer smarter? Jabe?

So, how much fuel did one of those PT boats carry? I would guess full throttle was only used as a last resort, what kind of speed did 4,500 HP produce?

12 miles per gallon in the 67 Lincoln is better than I expected ;-)

The ELCO PT boats used three of those Packard engines and consumed 500 gallons of aviation gas an hour at full speed.

That is just mind boggling.  And I though my 67 Lincoln that gets 12 miles per gallon was thirsty.

Yes it is John, and for the right amount of money you can get a ride in "Pardon Me" which is powered by one of those Packard engines.
