Upholstery pics will have to wait.. he has to modify them a little bit. Wasn't able to bring the boat to him so he did it remotely which made things a bit more difficult. I do finally have a cover though! Can finally spend less time cleaning and more time ironing out the details. Was painful drilling more holes for snaps but it had to be done...

i used that 4’ rule it worked out perfect for my ranger… I could’ve almost used and extra 6-12” on I think throttle as it’s a touch further away from controls… where they hook up on motor maybe different on all motors though of course.
I used this brand for 56’ Evinrude
It looks like my battery is in excess of what Ray is saying on cranking amps at 1000cca but is a marine crank battery… very impressed so far with it.. rare to have to charge for my load and no charge system..
look forward to seeing upholstery !!

Without knowing the details of what motor, starter, charging system, etc, a 400CCA or larger battery will start about any vintage outboard and any group 24 or larger will have more Cold Cranking Amps than that. Even if you’re going to run without a charging system I would get a marine starting battery, not a deep cycle battery. With a well tuned motor and no draws other than starting the motor most marine group 24 starting batteries will last a week or better of running everyday with no charging system before they need charging.

if you are still needing a hand full of rivets send me a PM with what you need and an address.

Can anyone advise on what size battery I need for the boat?

I'm also looking for a decent price on a seloc manual for the '58 at a reasonable price in canada if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Pics of apholstery and new cover coming soon. :)

I've read that you should measure from the controls to the engine and add 4' for the gear and throttle cables but that seems excessive. Any truth to that? Think I've found some but they're $100 a piece and don't want to have to buy more.

That's my controller yep, just missing the detent ball and spring. The 'gear' I mentioned was the cable for switching gears.

Thanks for the reply!

the throttle cable is fairly available I believe I purchased on Amazon

picture below is this your controller? Are you after plastic gear or the metal one attached to shift/throttle handle?

the detent with spring/button I never found, mine is worn and thought it have to be replaced but surprisingly works well.

I totally agree.. just ordered 6 pulleys from a website suggested here, they didn't have a gun but I was robbed. Pretty disgusting buying anything in this 'country' these days.

Not many people around that like or fix old things. I usually just end up fabricating my own parts but some originals would be nice to have. Looking for new gear and throttle cables at the moment and not having any luck. Same with detent balls for my vintage johnson controls. I'll probably get robbed on ebay for those next.

I'm in alberta thankfully, one of the last barely sane provinces.

I don’t want to sound like a Debbie downer but good luck Canada!!
marinepartscanada.com I’ve tried couple times they distribute to your local dealer at a amazing 1000% mark up..
marineengine.com is what your referring to im assuming? Have everything but don’t sell to Canada..
ebay/amazon watch closely..
if you can find a spare motor that’s the ticket! Not found one here in great white north yet, but there’s a Beaty donor in usa that has my matching cowling.. be diligent search everyday.. lots of yard sales till your green in the face.
what side are you east or west? I’ve found some Johnson’s of that era.. what are you after possibly I can help?

best of luck there out there just not when you need it unfortunately

Thank you to everyone who's been adding their 2 cents. Definitely more confident now and headed in the right direction. I'm in the process of having cushions made for my boat so will just pull the cables through the holes temporarily until my grommets show up. Anyone know a good place to get parts for steering? I've ordered pulleys from the suggested site. Just looking for cable clamps and springs and maybe hold downs for the pulleys. (Made a couple of my own from stainless but some new aluminum ones might be nice). A factory engine mount for the cable steering would be cool too although I could fab one if need be. Parts A,C,D,E in the attached pic.

I'd also like to replace the ss hardware that I used attach my patches with solid rivets. Anyone know a good site to order those from in smaller quantities?

I'm also looking for recommendations for a website for parts for the '58 johnson 35 horse. The one good website I've found doesnt ship out of the USA. So any others that ship to Canada would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen little aluminum brackets that only used one fastener to clamp electrical cables to the side, guides for the steering cables are not necessary beyond the grommets in the seat backs.
