This what I was told by this particular straight 6 restorer:
kits made by Bay manufacturing in Ohio were extended shaft kits used an extension to make short shaft to long shaft, longer bolts, control shaft and drive shaft, etc. So if long shafts on a particular engine have the Bay Kit to extend to long shaft, KIt can be removed to take back to short shaft-factory are either long shaft or short shaft with long or short drive shafts, gear control, shafts, water pic ups etc-whole thing needs to be changed to convert factory units from long to short shaft. ie Bay kits use an add on extender for all components needing to be extended. Factory short shafts and long shafts are sold from the factory with dedicated manufactured long or short shaft components, not add on extensions to convert short to long...
This is a picture of a just discovered skunk works of 150 hp Mercs. I had heard rumors of this place and just stumbled on it this morning. I’m scheduled to visit in the near future.
The challenge is finding short shaft versions-there were two in FL that sold quickly. Wondering if I can use my short shaft mid and lower section on a 150 powerhead. Alternative is to extend my DC transom to a 20inch like some came through with from the factory. Here are more long shaft TOP Merc 6s.
I someone said that Merc long shafts had an extension “kit” for the 20 inch. Extension can be removed from drive shaft and shift shaft to make a short shaft. I’m trying to find out if you can just remove the “extension” or if you need a short shafts and of so, how available are the short drive and shift shafts.excuse the typos..
