TOPIC: Best Battery?

Best Battery? 20 May 2018 23:24 #85128

I just replaced an AGM that was purchased in 2010, run three years + starting a drag bike then sat two years, transferred over to the Flyer for two more years, it only failed after I let it get pulled down too far.
Starts a high compression 50 HP OMC with ease, weighs 12 pounds.

The patterned aluminium came from a piece of scrap air conditioning or HVAC equipment. Almost everything we make comes from scrap.

Here is the battery I got from Advance Auto Parts. I used it for the first time up at Arrowhead and was extremely pleased with it. Cranked my 40 big twin almost instantly every time. I was nervous about running accessories since it was the first use, but when I got home and put it on the charger it was still in good shape. Next step is to get a solar charger like Neil's and not worry about it anymore.

Wayne, what's the pattern of the aluminum the box tops are made from? It looks a lot like that unobtainable 'ice flower' pattern on our decks and dashboards.
Are you guys hoarding a secret stash of it up there? ;)

I run a Mercury. The solenoid and rectifier are under the cowl. The grey box is just a waterproof NEMA enclosure that houses the automatic bilge pump switch. Ian made the boxes. I only helped put them together.

Wayne, is the starter solenoid with the battery? What's in the other box, did you say you made the boxes also?

Going on 4 years now I think. The batteries are easily half the size and weight of a standard group 24.

Got a pic?

Home made boxes fit between the transom braces of my 1955 Vagabond. I started with ammo boxes to prove the concept.

i use a lawn mower/utility battery.....not AGM but sealed.......very light weight......i do have a 30 watt solar panel for charging, but i am a smoker and the cigarette lighter gets used quite often when cruising........never had an issue with a low battery......or cranking power, but i am running an OMC, starts with a fart..........

just my thoughts, no charging system, go with a deep cycle, charging system go with a standerd cranking battery........deep cycle love to be drained before recharching, cranking batteries need too be topped back up after being used, all batteries have a life, its the number of cycles they go through, charge/discharge is one cycle, they all have a life span when used for their purpose, so many cycles then they are done...used correctly for their application they will last quite some time..........
