Look what I found. Torque specs for all early Johnson Motors by Model, JW, CD, AD, QD, FD.

65 lbs was for the 35's and early 40's. I think 61 and up went to 100 lbs.

The change from 65 to 100ft. lbs. was when the crankshaft changed from 3/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter for the RD series..

always nice to find that needle in the haystack of probable cause.....not knowing the history of the motor, it may have had an earlier issue that stressed the key.....they all fart and sneeze till they are dialed in, and not very often a key will give....but it happens......personally, i feel much more comfortable checking and tuning things so in my mind all is good......i am still learning......
if you are going to do a bunch of these, the timing tool is a sweet thing to use for setting the points....feeler gauge works fine, there as good as the person using them, i just found using the timing tool, there is no second guessing........(all Dans fault) they are spot bang on........cheers, keep us up to speed on how things go

I put the wrench on mine and hit it with my palm once and it spun free, I doubt it had enough torque. He is a good friend and actually gave me the motor he thought he was doing me a favor and put new points and condensers in it and I am sure he didn't have it torqued enough.

All 5.5 HP to 18 HP motors took 40 to 45 Foot pounds of torque. 3 HP took 25 to 30 foot pounds of torque. These values are for OMC motors only up through 1958.

Set the points at .020 inches and the timing is good.
