Thanks, I sent you a pm with my info.  The cowling was an interesting project. Never made one before.  first was making a pattern out of a flexable piece of plastic.. a lot of fitting, cutting, trying then adding pieces back with duct tape and adjusting and trying again.  Then cutting the clear plastic then bending it around and holding in place while I drilled for the screws.  But I was pleased with the results.  It breaks the wind well, I am sure that I made it taller than the original and I always wonder  how much it slows it down and also how much pressure there is holding the bow down a bit.  But she is a fun boat to play with and thats all that matters  At my age I am not going for any records lol  I just have to get a motor together for it, the one in the picture was not mine

If you are interested, send me an email address and I'll make you a copy of the newspaper coverage of that Orange Cup Regatta at Lakeland, FL, May 1994.  Dave drove in five classes, won 12 heats (1st time ever) and set three World Records including one in 350 Alky (Pro) hydroplane.  Damn, I had forgotten about a lot of that.  It's been a long time.  He was a hydroplane animal.  Glad he didn't race in my class.

I don't know if he still races or not.

You did a good job on the cowling.

Cheers,

Merky

Thanks. And my guess is that it is the boat I will have to find that listing of the record.  My windshield is my own design. It was missing when I got the boat so I have no clue to what the original looked like. That was interesting to make and fit.  Dave did tell me he ran it with a merc 44 when that motor came out. Who would have known that I would learn history on my race boat on a Featherctaft site lol it’s a small world   Now I need the right motor for it. That one was borrowed. Long story

I don't have Dave's number handy, but I'll chase is down.

The last time I went to the Lake Shipp AOMCI meet prior to this covid crap, Dave's younger brother was there and I sold him a early 50's Johnson 5hp motor.   He told me then that Dave was doing fine.

APBA's Speed Records information list the owner of the boat Dave set the record with as being Gene Arbid.  Could that be Dave's record boat?  That would really be something.

The Hooten family, starting with Dave's late dad, Tommy were really a force to be reckoned with in the classes that they competed in.

I never drove a Furnal built boat but I saw a lot of them running, especially in the stock classes powered by the various Yamato motors.  I don't remember anyone I raced against in the late 80's to early 2000's running one in the 125cc hydro class.  Maybe that was a good thing, huh?

Cheers,

Thanks for the input. I would say that you saw this Furnal flyer(sp) race. It was Dave Hooten that raced this boat for Gene Arbid. I would like to find some vintage pictures of it racing. Do you have a phone number for Dave. I talked with him back when I picked up the boat. He said it was in a league of its own.

Hi Ray,

Like David Hooten's D-Stock hydro record, my competition record was also for 5 miles, 3 laps and was 72.816 mph.  I regularly saw 82/83 mph on both my Keller speedometer as well as a GPS while I was out testing.

After getting a bad start, I broke Larry Latta's existing record which was around 66mph on Saturday afternoon.  Then on Sunday morning on mill pond water and lower ambient temp, I broke my Saturday's record, then broke it again in the second heat with a perfect start.

The Professional Racing Outboards commission for APBA decided some years back that running for records on the 1 2/3 mile courses was too dangerous and elected to quit running for records on that long course,  but lucky for me, (and David and many others) APBA still recognizes our records.  It was a World Record at the time, may still be.

John Peters out on the west coast has pushed the 125cc hydroplane Kilo (straightaway) record to 85.837 mph running a purpose built Italian VRP racing outboard motor.

Fastest ride I ever had was 96mph in Ralph Donald's Pro 350cc Konig powered hydro.  Smooth......

What remains today of my home-built 125cc outboards from 1978-1994.  I ran a Konig VM-125 in the mid-70's and a VRP 125 briefly in 2005, then losing interest, I retired from racing. I quit building boats for people around 2010.

Hey Merky,

what speed did you run with that 7 1/2 cube motor?

Great shot Syd,

If memory serves me correctly, the APBA D-Stock Hydro Kilo record is up in the high 80's.  Almost 90 mph I believe and those were 40 cube Mercs.

The 3 lap 5 mile D-Stock outboard competition record is still held by a friend of mine, David Hooten in Florida at almost 76 mph for 5 miles.

Funny thing is that Dave and I set records on the same day at Lakeland, Florida in May of 1994, and that both of our records, his in Stock Outboard, and mine in Pro Outboard (Alky) still stand, Dave's with his 40 cube Merc, and mine with my home-built 125cc (7 1/2 cube) single cylinder Kawasaki KX-125 based motor.

Is that a Karleson boat in your pix?

And yes, it is big fun.
