Having read only the last 2 pgs of this thread, I'm moved to comment after reading Neil's comment re: the Slant 6. I recall doing a tuneup on my college roommate's Valiant while in school in Upstate NY. Everyone in the auto tuneup class stared in disbelief when I popped off the distributor cap to change the points. The only thing left of them were the metal arms that the points are attached to. Still started every time that way.
Also, re: the knock it had at idle. When I told my professor of my roomie's intentions to drive the car to Gulf Shores, AL over the Xmas holiday, his response was that the car wouldn't make it and be sure to bring a screwdriver to remove the tags and pry off the VIN plate when it died. The car made it down and back w/o a problem.
Lastly, my roomie didn't have enough $$ for antifreeze so he'd let the coolant freeze during the week. We'd start it every Sat and idle till it overheated. Then we'd shut it off and let the heat melt the ice in the radiator. This was repeated several times, the most enjoyable part was, with the radiator cap off, watching pieces of ice pass by the radiator neck and listen to them go through the water pump. Great times and an indestructible motor.

I don't know, Jabe. I've had the American Motors, Dodge, and Ford inline 6's. Now that I think about it, in the 80's AM may have bought their motors from Ford. Wasn't long before AM went under. The Dodge was always a great motor.

That was the deciding factor. Almost no rust and the frame was clean. American Motors inline 6, but all Dana running gear. Plus, it's built like a tank.

Nice Rob, won't find one of them up here in that good of shape. Up here you'd be buying a rust bucket.

I am a sucker for connections to my past glory days. After getting stuck in my van, in my own yards.....Quincy FL, Alexandria LA and Boyce LA, I decided it was time for a 4x4 pickup. I was directed by fate to this truck. It is the same year as my first "new" vehicle. Not everyone understands the need for 2 vehicle's, but everyone knows a cowboy has more than one pony in his remuda...…
What a beast...….
