Jaques, what style handles did your boat come with? From your transom, looks like you're going to put the bow handle style in.

Vinyl Coated STAINLESS STEEL Cable, 1/8" - 3/16", 7x19, 50 ft
Buy It Now

I have use this wire, bought from the same seller twice, and am very happy with it. It stainless and wraps around pulleys and drums with no problems.   Its been on my DR for two years and no sign of the vinyl yellowing or showing any wear.

Not to be contrary (but I am going to be anyway) they do still make the drum and cable systems but they are designed for racing use and not really too adaptable to vintage boats like ours.

Ray, contrary is perfectly acceptable when I'm just plain wrong. :)

I second the McMaster-Carr cable. It's much better than the 'dog run' stuff, and this isn't a place to scrimp.  As fast as they ship, it may be nearly as quick going to the hardware store too.

Hardware stores carry plastic coated galvanized cables that work well but they are somewhat stiff and work harden over time and get stiffer.
McMaster-Carr carries stainless steel ultra flexible lubricated cable coated with vinyl that is quite a bit pricier but I feel worth the cost, I also don’t buy cheap tires for my autos ;-)

eBay is you best bet, expect to pay anywhere from $75 or so and up.

While we’re on the topic, where does one get the plastic covered wire that people use for these?

That's looking fantastic Jaques!  Did you do a cover for the rear dash too? They look very much the same texture-wise.

CB... they just don't make the drum type any more and lots of boat stores will tell you how 'dangerous' they are (...which can be true if they're not properly installed and inspected regularly). If you need one, the only real choice is to haunt the auction sites regularly. And yes, the prices can be ridiculous sometimes.

Jpalin,

curious is your steering something you purchased that is still accessible? It looks drum steering but cap on dash looks newer?

trying to track drum steering down not sure is there a new old aftermarket?

Thx for pics very gorgeous boat!!

It’s two old broken drum steering systems that I combined and changed to make one good one.
