We have seen a couple of failures from steering cable anchors not through bolted, if you did not install the steering yourself you should check to make sure the pad eyes that hold the pulleys and the final anchor spring are through bolted, not just screwed into wood.
We have also seen broken pulleys, cable with the cover breaking off, loose steering wheels where they attach to the tapered shaft, cable and springs wearing through at anchor points and bad cable routes that have the cables dragging on things. Just good regular maintenance can keep a fun day on the lake from being a not fun day!

A few years back at a gathering at Nicks I asked Bud King, a former Flying Boatman, if they ever had a steering failure in their shows, the answer was “Never, it was mandatory to inspect your steering before every practice and every show!”

With Arrowhead coming right up I would like to remind everyone to check their safety equipment and inspect their steering system. We often run in large groups and sometimes fairly close together.
We have had some close calls in the past so let’s all be safe and make sure we are up on our maintenance.
One additional item is a new law requiring you to use the emergency kill switch if the boat has one has gone into effect, I don’t know if it is being actively enforced but it is a good safety measure. It does not apply to older boats but it is not too big of a job to install one on the older motors.

Thanks Ray for the safety info. I would most definitely like for you to take a look at my set-up. I have been using it all summer and seams to be working fine, but I am no pro.
