In-water dead storage at the Palm Gardens Restaurant and Marina on the Dead River
Headed north on the Ocklawaha River through the Moss Bluff Lock. Lock is 139' long x 30' wide x 30' deep with a total volume of approximately 936,000 gallons. Water level in the lock rises/falls 23' in about 12 minutes, moving about 720,000 gallons for a fill/empty flow rate of about 1000 gallons/second. No turbulence when the lock is emptying. Major turbulence at the south end of the lock when it is filling. No wonder the lockmaster (Old Yeller) directed us to move to the north end before he opened the fill valve. To see turbulence go to:

Great pics Dan. I believe we saw a manatee 2 or 3 years ago. I saw 5 together this year and two of them were the biggest I have ever seen. They had prop scars, so I'm thinking they may have been "rescue/rehab" manatees brought in. I don't see how they could get there otherwise.
